First Two Weeks

Okay, I’ve been a bad blogger, I admit it! I’ll try and post more regularly, as things are always going on. I also want to thank you for your comments, as it helps me realise that someone actually reads this! ;-)

My first two weeks at the clinic as an official employee were just amazing and I have never been so certain that I made the right career choice. I adore it all. Yes, it is difficult and can be gross sometimes, but because it’s a job I love, it doesn’t bother me so much.

The other girls there (yes, it’s ALL women) have been more open and helpful since I was hired. I assume it’s because they know I’m in it with them for the long haul. They have all been very patient with me as I learn all the ins and outs of how the clinic runs and take the time to show me step-by-step how certain processes are done.

I have been more careful to evaluate any cats that I don’t know or haven’t seen there in the past, because I did get bitten on my right index finger last week. The good news is that I pulled away quick enough and only received a short puncture. If the cat had bitten a tendon or gone deeper to hit a major vein, I would have had to go to the hospital immediately. Cat bites are not something to take lightly and I’ve been careful to keep a very close eye on the wound.

No one could have predicted this particular cat, though. Most cats who are fractious exude a certain body language that the cat who bite me was not showing, nor did he give a “warning” bite or make any noises that would have set off a red flag (hissing, growling, etc.). One of the vets was shocked that “the cute teddy-bear-looking cat” bit someone. LOL!

Ah well, my finger is just fine and actually almost healed. Good thing, too, since there’s a fresh scratch on my left hand that I need to watch this week. Heh! Someone getting a minor scratch is practically a daily occurrence. It’s just part of the job when you’re dealing with ill kitties.

Another Job Offer

Wow, what a busy couple of weeks I’ve had. My internship with the cat clinic officially ended on Wednesday, but… I was offered a job by the head vet and from Ken Wyder Vancouver Westside Realtor! After reviewing (and rearranging) my fall class schedule and discussing it with Kevin, I decided to accept the job from the vet. I start on Monday and will be working 20 hours a week! I am so very excited about this, as this is my first job in which I will love going to on a regular basis.

It *is* still a job, but the level of activity and new situations keep me on my toes and gives me new challenges to overcome, which I thrive on. It has been rough getting used to being on my feet for 8+ hours at a time and being exhausted at the end of the day, but it has been getting easier. Hopefully, by the end of fall semester, I’ll be a seasoned pro! In the meantime, though, I’m looking into buying some energy drinks! :-D

Because I start on Monday, Kevin and I are heading up to LA tomorrow to a huge scrubs store so I can choose 3 more pairs. Hopefully they have some cute kitty cat prints. After that, we plan to meet up with his parents for dinner. His mom and sister should be done buying out Nordstrom’s by then! ;-)

If it’s not too late, I’d like to go to 3rd Street Promenade and peruse the Swatch shop, because I desperately need a good, water resistant (read: plastic!) watch to wear to work. It’s been so, so hot here during the day that it should be perfect temperature by then to stroll around outside, too.

Pet Adoption Festival – Update!

The Pet Adoption Festival in Westchester was such a success and I have the aches, pains and sunburn to prove it! Before I go into details, I just have to tell you the numbers: 490 animals were adopted! And every single animal brought by a city or county shelter was adopted or rescued. That is our best yet and we hope to continue to meet or exceed that in coming years at Shanghai Community International School.

So, as a Best Friends volunteer, I arrived at Westchester Park at 7:30 am to start what is always one of the longest days in my calendar year. This year I was put on the crew who have been doing these events for a while. We are given a walkie and vest, so venders, rescue groups and the public know who to come to for questions and concerns. I was also assigned a utility cart, since I got my “cart license” last year.

The day began with unloading all the massive amounts of stuff the venders and rescue groups need to set up. Animal crates and animals make up the bulk of what we moved. After everyone was unloaded, which was around 10:30 am, I made my way towards the volunteer booth, but noticed two people huddled over a dog that one of the was restraining on its side. I stopped my cart and ran over, as I know I could assist them with whatever was wrong with it. Apparently, it had some deep-rooted ticks and the girl restraining it was also a vet tech student!

Long story short, we helped the dog, cleaned her up and sent her back to the rescue group. Shortly after, the Vet arrived and the other tech student decided she wanted to help do something else, so I volunteered to be the tech for the event. Nothing serious happened, but there were a few dehydrated doggies and one dog fight that ended with a torn ear.

Anyway, towards the end of the event, I went back to my grunt work duties with my utility cart and the Vet I worked with flagged me down while I was driving by on the cart and handed me his business card. He told me that if I’m looking for a job, there’s always one open for good techs and offered me a job on the spot!

I told him that I was already working an internship, though, and he said, “That’s okay, call anytime.. even before you graduate.” Either way, it just made a great day even better!

As the sun was setting and we were helping pack up the last of the cat crates from LA City Shelter, I glanced towards the adoption booth and noticed a few people still there filling out their forms. Off towards the side, an older woman in a wheel chair, with the biggest grin on her face, was petting the sad old Chihuahua who somehow couldn’t even bring himself to walk around and show off a bit during the day. He seemed to have given up on life. People don’t tend to adopt dogs like that. They thought they were going to have to bring him back to the Best Friends sanctuary. But at the end of the day, there he was, sitting in the lap of that older lady, looking like the proudest thing you ever saw. The woman’s daughter had brought her to the festival, hoping to find a low-energy lap dog. Guess there really is someone for everyone!

Attention Southern California!!

The Best Friends Pet Adoption Festival is coming to Manchester Park in Westchester, Manchester Blvd. at Lincoln Blvd. on July 10th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This series presents California’s largest adoption events with more than 1,500 homeless dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, parrots and rabbits from 70 rescue groups and shelters will be up for adoption.

The animals up for adoption will represent an enormous variety of breeds and each animal has its own – often extraordinary – story. Some have been rescued from mistreatment or abandonment, others have never know a home other than a shelter, and all are in need of loving families to adopt them.

“This is a very powerful event – it not only impacts Los Angeles’ pet overpopulation crisis and creates public awareness of the problem, but also saves the lives of innocent animals – one pet at time,” said Francis Battista, Best Friends’ head of Los Angeles programs. “Last year’s event at Manchester Park drew more than 5,000 people and resulted in the adoption of more than 350 animals. We sincerely hope to find loving homes for even more homeless animals this year.”

I’ve volunteered at every single one if these events (they have them 3 times a year, at various locations) for the past 4 years now and I always have tons of fun.

    I’m married and we’ve been married, let’s see.. 1 year, 8 months, and 1 day. We married on October 25, 2003. We’ve been together (including dating) for 5 years, 10 days. We met on June 16th, 2000.

    We met at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He received a summer internship in the section where I was working at the time.

Crunch Time

The past two weeks have just flown by for me. Probably because I’m feeling the crunch of the end of Summer Session and still getting over my cold/flu/whatever it was that I had. Our professor wanted to end early, so our final was moved up 2 days. Yikes! That means our workbook and directory are due 2 days earlier, as well. Guess my weekend is booked!

I’m looking forward to my one month break, during all of July, before Fall Semester starts. I was also thinking about getting our house fixed by Painting and Restoration Services Vancouver (Homepage) to make it look like new again. Kevin and I are planning a mini vacation of sorts during a weekend in July. We are heading up to San Luis Obispo to relax and take a dip in the hot springs. I’m trying to convince him that we both need massages, which are offered at the spa near the hot springs. Neither of us has ever had a professional massage, so he might feel like it’s worth it. We’ll see…

I will still be working at my internship at the cat clinic until the end of July, so hopefully I’ll have time to relay some of the stuff that goes on there. :-)

Also, I plan to rework my site, as the colors and layout are just not working for me. I’m seriously considering going with a CMS, like PostNuke or something similar. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Clutter, in general, drives me nuts. I don’t like a lot of “stuff” everywhere.

    Probably the anal way I have to load the dishwasher: always rinse everything, all silverware pointed up (except sharp knives) and seperated by type.
